Tom photographed this in 1949 from the edge of the Reflecting Pool, catching the Washington Monument mirrored perfectly in the still water on a clear summer morning. At 555 feet, the obelisk was the tallest structure in the world when it was finished in 1884, and it still anchors the entire Mall today.
